Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is new UK legislation which requires large enterprises to carry out an energy audit of their business operations over a recurring 4-yearly cycle. Over 10,000 of Britain’s biggest companies are required to comply and more than £1.5 billion in annual energy costs are expected to be saved.
Who qualifies for ESOS?
Large organisations (those with more than 250 employees or a turnover in excess of €50M) will be required to review total energy use from their buildings, transport and industrial processes.
Who benefits from ESOS?
The principal beneficaries will be the organisations who implement the energy saving initiatives that are recommended in the audits. Reduced energy costs translate directly into increased profits.
What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 is the international standard for an energy management system. If you decide to implement the standard you will be performing many of the same processes as you would do for ESOS.
Organisations will not need to undertake an ESOS assessment if operations are fully covered by ISO 50001; however you are still required to notify the Environment Agency that you have fully complied with ESOS.
The key differences between ESOS and ISO 50001 are:
- ISO 50001 is an internationally recognised standard and being certfied conveys an important message that continual improvement in energy demand and emissions are taken seriously in the organisation.
- ISO 50001 may be required when dealing with larger customers who may mandate that all of their supply chain companies are ISO 50001 certified.
- ESOS lead assessors can help customers prepare and conduct the ESOS energy audit and then sign it off. With ISO 50001 the consultant and the auditor signing off the application cannot be the same person.
