Aerial thermal imaging

Thermal imaging cameras have long been used to assist with building insulation inspections. However, thermographers have now discovered the benefits of using aerial thermal imaging technology to help map heat loss in buildings.

Surveying roofs using this technique can offer distinct advantages because not all roofs are easily accessible and unless there are adjacent buildings that can serve as a vantage point it would be very difficult for the thermographer to carry out a thorough inspection.

Using a helicopter would be the perfect solution, for this would allow the thermographer to look at the roof from a vantage point of his choice. However, helicopters do not come cheap so a more affordable alternative could be to use an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a built-in thermal imaging camera such as the one shown in the video.
