Hotels rank among the top five energy users in the built environment. Energy bills in some establishments can represent more than 40% of business overheads. A recent European Union study of energy conservation in European Hotels revealed a potential for 25 – 30 per cent savings in energy costs.
The study highlighted that energy cost savings in the following Hotel services can be achievable:-
- 15 – 20 per cent for space heating
- 5 – 30 per cent for cooling and air conditioning
- 40 – 70 per cent for domestic hot water
- 7 – 60 per cent for lighting
An in-depth energy study carried out at the prestigeous Claremont Hotel on the Isle of Man highlighted the potential for reducing energy costs from £100,000 p.a. to £63,000 p.a. The study also showed that the financial investment required could be recouped in less than 5 years.
