Condensation and mould – a health problem in many homes.
Condensation damp is probably the most common type of mould found in the home. And whilst structural damp problems and rising damp are not good news, condensation damp is pretty grim too! Left untreated, condensation is followed by black mould, not an attractive look and most annoying if you have recently decorated.
Fighting condensation is a continuous battle over the winter months, wiping up condensation from windows, walls, toilet cisterns and doors, just goes on and on and on! What’s more, living in conditions with condensation and mould can take a toll on your health!
Symptoms could include:
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Sinus problems
- Depression
- Sneezing
- Skin rashes
You may not be aware but condensation is becoming an increasingly common problem, effecting around 1 in 5 households in the UK. As we take measures to make our homes more energy efficient (with the ultimate aim to save money on our heating bills and keep warm), by improving them with double glazing, cavity wall and loft installation, natural ventilation is reduced. Effectively, the home is being ‘sealed up’ and is unable to breathe. As a result of this, high levels of humidity are trapped inside the home leading to condensation and mould issues.
Furthermore; high levels of humidity also create the perfect breeding ground for the household dust mite, which is a well-known trigger of asthma and other allergies.
The solution is good ventilation…
